My weekend journey began in Arkport, N.Y., which is about 2 hours 20 minutes to Fulton Speedway, my first destination for racing. I was praying the whole time there was not going to be any rain for the weekend as it has rained almost every day and all of us were anxious to see some racing on Memorial Day weekend. Luck prevailed and there was no rain at all on Saturday. This weekend was much different than any other
s when I take a trip to the track and there is camping involved, tent camping that is… For once I didn’t take the kitchen sink, had no plans set in stone and was just winging it for the weekend. The only set plan was to end up at a racetrack and see some dirt racing.
I had my little racing buddy Samantha with me. I got her into racing and working at Genesee Speedway and now at South Arcade Speedway. This weekend was a birthday present from me to her. She didn’t have any idea that we were going to Fulton until the last minute when I realized my friends were headed that way to race in the SUNY Canton Sportsman Division. Kevin McPherson driving the #2 Sportsman normally race at Woodhull Raceway, but with the added $1,000 that Industrial Tire was putting into the purse, he figured he would try a new track and a shot at some extra money.
We both arrived at Fulton Speedway just before 4 pm and was the second car parked next to the woods where the grandstand gate was. I was getting excited now, it has been about 9 years or more since I have been here and only the third time in my life. Very awesome! I was able to save some money as 18 and younger got in for free so it only cost me $12 to watch the nights racing on Ferris Mowers night. It was good to see old friends and also meet up with some new ones. There was a gentleman that I talked with before we went in the gate and he hadn’t been to the racing in over 30 years!!! I figured local tracks must be doing something right to bring back some fans. Anyway, it was cool we could take our lawn chairs in and sit on the grandstands, reminded me of Woodhull raceway, the seats are almost the same. Sam was impressed that they have the tram service to give you a ride from the gate to top of grandstands, not a long walk, but great hospitality for those who need a ride. Other interesting tidbits was that the CT525 Modifieds have sail panels on them and I am not a fan of them, it was nice to see a different body to give the fans a different car to see as the Modifieds and Sportsman regular divisions all were the typical body style. The food was excellent and the pizza was good too. The staff working the concession stands were very pleasant and polite as well. Some might find this odd, but when we go to new racetracks we usually rate the bathrooms and I can say the men’s room was very clean and tidy and nice soap dispenser also. Sam said the same about the women’s restroom. Heck we all have to go when we have to go right… Alan Johnson wound up winning the Modifieds as he was running a few different lines in the feature and charged to the front to win followed by Jimmy Phelps and then Matt Fink. My friend Kevin missed the gear in the heat and had to start the consi. In the consi there was a small rut in turn one and he suffered a left rear flat and was a DNF. They had fun regardless, go get them next time Kevin.
In ending with my story from Fulton Speedway I have to give a shout out to John Wight and staff for an excellent track, service and entertainment. It was a pleasure to see dirt flying and no raindrops falling from the sky.. There was good racing in all divisions and I loved the mod lites, they were fast and put on one heck of a show!
